Beijing opera headdress, with three metal ornaments in the shape of dragons, two in profile, one with moving tongue and eyes, two springs and bells attached to the ends. Each panel at the front is decorated with pink and blue flowers.

This slim, shallow wooden mask shows a white face, painted with white clay or kaolin, and has a fibrous beard attached to the base of the mask. Facial features show cowrie-shaped eyes and a long, sagittate nose, and no mouth.


Elephant ivory mask

This shallow, convex ivory mask displays protruding oval eyes and a small open oval mouth, with a long and slender nose. There are six holes round the base of the mask, possibly for a bear-like attachment.

This triangular shaped mask is rounded off at the top where incised grooved indicate the hairline. Facial features show two round protruding eyes, a triangular shaped nose and a horizontal mouth with thick, protruding lips.


Fang mask

This large broad, concave mask displays a long sagittate nose, and small eyes with well-arched decorated eyebrows. The small mouth is barely visible and sits above the squared jawline. The mask shows eroded patina, with possible traces of kaolin.


Wooden Fang mask

This mask is constructed from a yellowish wood with traces of kaolin on the oval-shaped face. It has small eye slits underneath large, dark eyebrows, a long nose and appears to be baring its teeth.


Wooden Kwele mask

This large wooden mask shows some a heart-shaped face, with cowrie-shaped eyes a large bulbous nose and traces of kaolin, however no eyeholes are apparent. There is significant damage to the left eye, together with both sides of the mask and a broken piece of wood at the top and base.


Yombe wooden mask

This mask is made of a light-coloured wood and displays painted lips and eyebrows, with a vertical motif painted on the forehead. There are apertures for the mouth and the eyes, and a hole on each side of the mask by the ear suggests attachments for wearing.


Jokwe mask

This mask is attached to a wooden base and carved from a dark wood. Both the base and the face of the mask show evidence of a red pigment. There are slits for the eyes and the open mouth shows filed teeth. The well-formed ears appear relatively high up on the mask.

This mask is said to refer to women afflicted with goitre. The face is painted white with eyeholes and an open mouth shows filed teeth.

This mask shows bulging, coffee bean eyes, flat, flared nostrils, wide mouth with thick lips and a protruding forehead. The eyes are highlighted kaolin and underlined in blue. Red paint is visible on the surface of the face. Perforations round the rim indicate the attachment of a costume.

This cow mask displays downward sloping horns, with two small ears on the side of the head. The ears are hollow for about tow thirds of their length and are supported by integral rods.

This triangular-shaped concave mask shows highly arched eyebrows with arched eye slits, a long slender nose, and an oval protruding mouth. White kaolin is evident on the face, giving a smooth matt surface finish, and red pigment is visible on the ears.


Kwele mask

This flat wooden mask has a heart-shaped concave face, which has been whitened with kaolin. It displays thin cowrie-shaped eye slits, a long sagittate nose and no visible mouth. There is one perforation each side of the mask.


Maskette

This small flat earthenware maskette shows a squared off ovoid face. The eyes are incised lines surrounded by a dot feature, which is paralleled in the open mouth. The nose is upturned with two perforations representing nostrils.

This oval shaped wooden mask shows much curvilinear carving on the face. The facial features show two large bulbous, round eye holes, a large flat nose with holes for the nostrils, and large upturned mouth.

This mask is made from hinoki wood with traces of clack and white pigment. Small perforations round the rim suggest an attachment of headdress or costume. This concave mask shows highly pronounced cheekbones, which give the appearance of hollow cheeks.


Olmec mask

This mask has been formed to fit the contours of the face. Two holes have been cut for the eyes which are set back. Above the eyes a line has been incised to represent the eyelids and the brow has been raised slightly. Two holes have been made to represent the nostrils.
